After selling rifle scopes on eBay for 6 years I can say with absolute certainty that the one area that confuses prospective new scope owners more than any is the choice of scope mounts. The good news is that unless your rifle is an unusual or vintage type then choosing the right scope mounts is simple. In this article you'll learn how to quickly determine what type you need.

So the, you have a new rifle and want to get a nice telescopic Rifle Scope to help you shoot better? And make it look very cool too

Selecting a rifle scope can be a tricky process in itself and I won't cover it in this article except briefly now: If you are shooting in normal dawn to dusk type light at ranges no more than say 300 yards/metres then get a 3-9x40 or similar variable magnification scope. 3-9 = it ranges between 3 and 9x magnification and the 40 bit means it has a 40mm wide lens at the end. This is a very good general purpose combination and there are options for most budgets from cheap to military.

Now what you need in order to fix the scope to the rifle are mounts. This should not be tricky but to save time, hassle and cost in returning incorrect mounts to the seller it's good to get it right first time.

There are 2 things you need to know:

1) What mounts are need for your scope in terms of (a) height and (b) ring diameter.

2) What type of rifles scope receiver grooves you have.

In many cases you may find scope and mount packages sold together, in these cases you can be sure that they will be correct for the scope but you still need to be sure that they will be OK for your rifle before you go ahead. If not then you'll need to ask the seller if they can swap for another type.

What mounts are need for your scope

Scope mounts come in 3 main heights. By height I mean how high they will lift the scope off the rifle. There are 3 main heights:

• Low - For scopes with upto 32mm lenses
• Medium - For scopes with upto 42mm lenses
• High - For scopes with 40-56mm lenses

There are also such things as ultra high but you're unlikely to need those unless you have a specialized requirement.

The size of lens rule is a good general guide but also bring your rifle into consideration. If it has say a bolt action then it's best to go for a high mount even with a smaller lens scope.

Scope Tube Diameter is the second consideration when matching mounts to scope.

Most scopes have a 25mm (1 inch) body tube and you'll find that most mounts are for these scopes. If not then they will specify that they are for a different diameter body - you'll find some with 30mm tubes. So be sure you know what your scopes body tube diameter is the choose your mounts to match.

What type of rifles scope receiver grooves you have

By this I mean the place where the scope mounts will attach on top of the rifle.

Commonly referred to as the scope base or rail, grooves or receiver.

There are 2 main types: Standard and Weaver (also often called Picatinny or Tactical)

In turn mounts are commonly referred to as Standard or Weaver mounts.

Standard -

• 2 grooved lines running front to back along the top of the rifle body
•  Between 9 and 13mm apart.

Weaver/Picatinny/Tactical -

• The grooves are 20-22mm apart
• The base is often more of a solid block design with horizontal "slats" across it (some mounts have arrestor blocks in their bases that give an extra degree of lock by mating with these grooves)

Standard bases are as the name suggests very common. They are the standard these days for air rifle and paintball guns and many lower powered pistols.

Weaver bases are to be found on higher power higher recoil rifles, especially military, hunting and shotguns. They are also found on many airsoft rifles where the replication is very accurate.

Your mount choice factors combine then...Examples

Your have an air rifle with a standard base and are getting a 3-9x40 scope with a 25mm tube = Standard Medium or High mounts.

Hunting rifle with 20mm weaver base  and you're getting a 6-24x50 scope with 30mm tube = High 30mm Weaver mounts.

1 or 2 piece?

This is a further division, I add this for completeness. If you're new then I'd say go for 2 piece as your first type.

1 piece is where the whole mount body is a single molded unit. This type is very strong and solid but may not be an option if you have a bolt action or top magazine rifle.

2 piece - Simply 2 mounts that you position on the rifle base rail. Not quite the rigidity of the 1 piece but more flexible in terms of positioning and ability to "work around" obstructions. Cheaper too.

How can i get a BB gun scope to fit on an airsoft gun?

The other day i found one of my fathers bb gun scopes.
i am into airsoft, using the plastic 6mm bbs rather than the smaller metal ones.
i would like to put the scope on my gun but the scope won't fit on the rails for my airsoft gun..

How do I make a break beam sensor that triggers a relay?

I want to make a break beam sensor that will trigger a 12v relay. I am trying to add a second stage to a coilgun and I want the second stage coil to fire when the projectile passes through the break beam sensor. I want to power the relay and the sensor with a 9v battery. Also the more simple the circuit the better. Thanks

A relay may not be fast enough. You need an electronic 'relay', such as an SCR, Triac, or MOSFET switch.

I have built circuits like this before (for other purposes), and that is exactly what I would use for a coil gun if/when I get around to experimenting, myself.

The input pulse can be done using something like this:

It would be OK to feed the output of the opamp to the trigger transformer, so long as you use an opamp with a short-circuit output rating of 'indefinite'. OR... put a capacitor in series with the output and a resistor in parallel with the trigger transformer.

Pulse Engineering makes a huge line of trigger transformers for this purpose. Sometimes you can get them on E-bay for cheap -- or from surplus electronics outlets.

How did the invention of the western horse saddle affect human capital?

I am mot sure I understand your question. First one of the important inventions was the stirrup.It let the rider be more stable in the saddle. and to be able to use weapons better I
think the western saddle just evolve from there. the canteal and the bars help keep you in the saddle, The horn gave you something to help you get on a horse and to tie off something you were trying to pull. the latago gave you a place to tie off little thing that you carry with you, Guns ,rifle, rope, and bed roll. It gave the cowboy a way to work and carry things that he would need in his line of work. You could use the saddle as a pillow, a shield., and a way to carry a calf, or a dead person. I do not know any cons for the saddle. as you can see they were very valuable to the cowboy and working riders and to any person riding, Try ridding all day bareback and you would under stand. But as capital, you would not part with you saddle unless you were dead or about to die. I do not know if this will help you or not. for sure it will get you started. i have not been on a horse in 10/12 years, but I still have about four Western Saddles in the shead.

Soft Plastic

How to make plastic fishing lures is one of the easier tasks when it comes to tackle making. It doesn't require a lot of tool, and the items required in order to make them are relatively inexpensive such as liquid plastic. Once these items are acquired you can make soft plastic worms and other plastic lures for pennies a piece.

The most expensive part about how to make plastic fishing lures is obtaining a mold. Molds are used to speed the whole process up and they make a more uniformed plastic worm. You simply pour the melted plastic inside holding the mold at an angle to insure the mold fills from bottom to top that way you do not get any air bubbles inside your plastic worms. Then you let the mold sit to cool so that the plastic sets, then removing the plastic worm carefully place them inside a small container of water to finish cooling and curing. Adding things like glitter etc are ways you can jazz up your own homemade fishing lures.

But what if you don't want to bother with purchasing a plastic worm mold? Can you still make soft plastic lures? How to make plastic fishing lures without a commercial mold is not that difficult to do. Here's how I go about making a mold from common Plaster of Paris. The first step is to simply create the two halves of the mold. You can use anything you like to hold the plaster, aluminum foil, small cardboard boxes, pie plates etc. The trick is to let the 2 halves partially set before actually creating your mold. I like to let my molds set for about 30 minutes to an hour depending on the thickness of the plaster.

The next step in how to make plastic fishing lures is to use a master worm. Now a master worm can be anything really, the easiest is to use a worm from your tackle box or make one from modeling clay, either way works. If you do choose to use a plastic worm from your tackle box make sure as you set the worm into one half of the mold to line up the seam on the worm with the top of the plaster otherwise you'll land up with 2 seams in your new plastic fishing lure. One from the master and one from your newly made mold.

Ok before setting the master worm inside one half of the mold it is important to coat the worm in either some Vaseline or vegetable oil. The purpose here is so that the worm doesn't stick to plaster once it is fully set. Now carefully set the plastic worm into the mold halfway. Again paying attention to any seams that may exist on your plastic worm.

Next we need to make registration pins in the mold so that it will line up the way we want when it comes time to pour in our melted plastic. The easiest way here is to use some finishing nails I like to use about 3 and set them into the semi set mold. Then put the other half of the mold on top, clamp it together and let it set overnight to insure the plaster fully sets.

All is not done yet, there are still a couple steps yet to do in how to make plastic fishing lures. Now after we have removed the master worm and the plaster is fully set you need to cut a sprue channel so that you have somewhere to pour in the melted plastic. Finally we need to seal the mold. Plaster is porous and even if it's fully set you will have all kinds of little leaks inside the mold if you do not take the precaution to seal your mold. Any kind of epoxy or mod podge will work. Don't get carried away just a light coat will do. Now our mold is finished.

As you can see how to make plastic fishing lures isn't that difficult and there are creative ways we can get around the more expensive parts to making plastic fishing worms by making our own molds. There are a few other pointer to make mention and you should be able to pour out your plastic worms without any trouble, and that is before pouring the melted plastic into the mold, coat the insides lightly with some vegetable oil or Vaseline just so its easier to remove the finished product.

I have a nickel in sealed soft plastic with a red band on top. Does the color mean anything?

I also have pennies in plastic with blue bands. What do these mean?

It sounds like they were cut from mint sets. The red band stands for the Philadelphia mint and the blue band for the Denver mint. See if there is a D mint mark on the blue ones. There should be no mint mark on the red cents only the higher denominations have a P. It is not uncommon to cut up sets for some people only want say the 1/2 dollar in the set. The coins are mint state.

Horse tack refers to the accessories worn by domesticated horses. Tacking a horse is the act of fitting a horse with a wide range of equipment before the horse is taken for a ride. Tacking up a horse requires expertise, since any discomfort for the horse causes a lot of strain for both the horse and the rider. The tack also has to be of the exact size and fit to make the horse comfortable.

Horse tack is basically of two kinds: English and western. Horse tack consists of a halter, saddle, saddle pad, stirrup, bridle, Girth (English) / Cinches (Western), lead ropes, martingale, harnesses, and breastplates. The bridle consists of the headstall, chin strap, bits and reins. There are three kinds of bridles: single, double and hackamore. The girths are of four kinds: webbing, leather, string and nylon. Saddles are of many kinds: jumping saddles, dressage saddles, polo saddles, park saddles, racing saddles, show saddles, all-purpose saddles, roping saddles, barrel racing saddles, endurance saddles, trail saddles, pleasure saddles, English side saddles and western side saddles, and military saddles. Similarly, there are different kinds of other equipment as well, based on the rider.

Horse tack has to be cleaned regularly to increase the life of the equipment. Wipe the tack with a wet sponge and then with a horse tack cleaner that is available on the market. Today, tack is made of synthetic materials instead of leather. This tack is lighter, less expensive and easier to maintain, as it can even be washed in the washing machine. Leather tack, on the other hand, is expensive and needs a lot of care. Tack can be stored in exclusive tack boxes which have built-in compartments for holding all the equipment.

Horse tack can be very expensive, depending on the quality and the material used. Leather tack is very costly. A headstall can cost as much as $170, while a martingale may be priced at around $90. A cinch can cost around $40, a rope halter $26, a pulling collar $105, an aluminum barrel stirrup $80, aluminum stirrup $50, noseband $135, and harness leather loping hackamore $225. However, there is also discount horse tack available at some stores. For instance, a whole nylon tack set is priced at $125. Some companies also offer custom-made horse tack. but snap on reins are amaing!! i only buy ones that are snap on for the same reasons maegan said. they are the best. the only time i dont use snap on reins is for shows and what not.

oh, and just as a suggestin for a back up bridle or something, if you want to do trail riding but not showing or anything, checkout sportack.com bridles. they look more english than western, so they wouldnt work in the show ring; but the trail one is specifically made so you can take of the bit and snap the reins o the bridle for safer leading and grzing. they come in all colors too.

personally, i thikn the bridle you chose would LOOK way better than a sportack one and would work really well for absolutley anything, i just find my sportack one really usefl. so just a suggestion for a back up or something like that!!!

what is the principle behind a moving bicycle? does the bicycle back wheel make revolution/complete turns?

The wheels on any moving vehicle that isn't skiding or sliding are rotating in the same way. The center of the wheel, where it attaches to the vehicle, moves forward with the speed of the vehicle, 10 m/s, say. Where the wheel touches the ground, it is momentarily at rest, so it grips the ground better [higher coefficient of friction, if you care] than if it were skidding. The top of the wheel moves momentarily at twice the vehicle speed, in this case 20 m/s. The front of the wheel is moving both forward at the momentary speed of 10 m/s and down at the speed of 10 m/s. The back of the wheel is moving simultaneously forward at 10 m/s and up at 10 m/s.

It is easier to visualize what is going on if you think of a track-laying vehicle such as a tank, the track of which sits motionless on the ground as the tank goes forward, is picked up at the rear of the tank and then flies forward at twice the tank's speed to be laid down again in front of the vehicle.

Bike, tank, car, even a wheel rolling free, they are all the same.

Fishing Rods

William Shakespeare Jr., an avid fisherman of 27 years, was not very happy with the existing fishing reels, so he decided to invent a device that could wind the Fishing Line back onto the spool. After having gotten exclusive rights to this winding reel, Shakespeare started his own fishing company and implemented his new design. Production of the Shakespeare casting rods started in the late seventies and included this patented spool feature. Is there a difference between Salt Water fishing rods and reels and fresh water?

I just got a Shakespeare Microspin Spinning Combo and intend to use it in the ocean. I am not looking to catch big fish, just small fish. Will this rod work in the salt water?

The main difference these days is size and strength. When I was a kid back in the 1970's, I had a friend who had a Garcia Mitchell 300 reel which rusted up after one use in the salt (which turned me off that brand for life), while my Penn spinning reels never had a problem.

However, I haven't heard of any problems like that recently, especially not with real name brand equipment, so I think manufacturers are making all their reels basically rust-resistant. There are a lot of people these days who use "freshwater" equipment for saltwater fishing.

In general, you should just spray the rod and reel with fresh water at the end of the day to get the salt off, and at the end of the season (or if it gets dunked in salt water), open up the reel and clean it out and re-lube it. This isn't so much for the rust, but more to get dried salt and other junk out of the reel (you should do this even for saltwater reels).

The main difference between the fresh and the salt is you'll have to replace your line more frequently, as the salt water breaks it down more quickly. Once the line loses its new, shiny look, it's also losing strength, which can make a big difference with very light line.

Cruiser Bike

Harley Davidson motorcycles have enjoyed a steadily growing customer base for the last 20 years and have become one of the most popular motorcycles around. I would expect this trend only to continue as the Boomers retire and look for new ways to both entertain them and spend their accumulated wealth.

The first thing that most new Harley Davidson owners do is head out in search of that famous Harley Davidson "sound." You know what I mean, nothing sounds as good as a nicely piped Harley Davidson purring down the road. The right pipe can turn heads from all directions so you want to make sure you get the right pipe that will suit your needs.

Like most motorcycle owners you want your pipes to look good, sound good and perform good. I have found a set of pipes that does that nicely and that is the Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered pipes. Vance and Hines made their name in the superbike world but they have become a dominant player in both the Harley Davidson world and the "cruiser" bike market in general.

I have installed a number of Vance and Hines Harley Pipes on various bikes with the most recent being on my 2007 Harley Davidson FXSTB. The Vance and Hines pipes installed very easily and fit the bike well. The heat shields run a full 230 degrees around the pipe and will virtually guarantee that the pipes will give a lustrous chrome shine for many years to come.

The fit and finish of the pipes is great and the sound is awesome. These pipes are not for the faint hearted and if you want that awesome Harley Davidson sound then the Vance and Hines Big Shot Staggered pipes will deliver you an awesome exhaust note. I will say that they are one of the louder Harley Davidson pipes out there so you may want to find someone with a set already installed on their bike that you could listen to. How far is too far to ride a cruiser bike?

I bought a cruiser bike the other day, my plans were to ride it around town, but I've been considering more and more riding it as far as a nearby city which is 12 or so miles riding distance.

As far as you can take - the upright sitting position makes it hard to get power in your pedaling. the wide seats usually found on cruisers might chaff you moreso than other bikes.

Many of the visitors to my website ask about vintage guitar values. Do you have a guitar about which you would like to have information? Do you have a question about Fender guitar value, Gibson guitar value, or maybe the value of a Martin guitar? Even if you don't know what kind of guitar you have, a little research will help you to find the value of your guitar.

What makes a guitar valuable?

Several factors figure into the value of a guitar. In general, the guitar must be one which is sought after by collectors and musicians. The demand for a guitar is determined in general by quality, beauty, and playability. This demand must outweigh the available supply.Age is an important factor in the value of a guitar, but a guitar is not necessarily more valuable just because it is older. It must have been made with a high standard of quality in the first place. An old mediocre quality guitar is just that--an old mediocre guitar! The actual year that a guitar was made may not be as important as the PERIOD in which it was made.

For example, electric guitars which are most valuable today include Fender Telecasters made before 1954, Fender Stratocasters made between 1954 and 1959, and Gibson Les Pauls made between 1958 and 1960. Acoustic guitars of the greatest value include Pre-World War II Martins and Gibsons.This is not to say that other guitars are not valuable. Many vintage guitars will bring a good price. The trick is to know approximately how much YOUR guitar is worth.

How Do I Determine the Value of My Guitar?

In order for you or anyone else to determine the value of your guitar, you must have certain information available. Ideally, you would know the brand, model, and serial number. The brand and model, however, can often be determined through the serial number. Then you must determine the condition of your guitar--prices differ greatly according to condition. Here are some guidelines: (these guidelines are from the "Blue Book of Acoustic and Electric Guitars")

100% - New - New with all factory materials, including warranty card, owner's manual, case, and other items that were originally included by the manufacturer. On currently manufactured instruments, the 100% price refers to an instrument not previously sold at retail. Even if a new instrument has been played only twice and traded in a week later, it no longer qualifies at 100%.

Excellent - this Excellent condition range is represented by both High Excellent and Low Excellent condition. High Excellent refers to an instrument that is very clean, looks almost new (perhaps a few light scratches/dings only), and has hardly been used. Low Excellent refers to a guitar that has been played/used, and has accumulated some minor wear in the form of light scratches, dings, small chips, etc. The older an instrument, the less likely it will be in High Excellent condition Even Low Excellent is seldom encountered on instruments over 50 years old, since most acoustic instruments were originally purchased to be played

Average - The Average guitar condition factor indicates an acoustic guitar that has been in a player's hands and has worn due to player use (hopefully, no abuse). High Average condition instruments have normal dents, small chips, and light dings on the body, and/or scratches on the top and back. However, there should be no problems unless indicated separately. Low Average condition instruments may reflect major finish problems, replacement parts, previous repairs (especially on older instruments), alterations, and neck/fret wear is typically visible.

Once you have this information at hand, you can attempt to find the value of the guitar by consulting various sources on the internet or you can have it appraised by an expert. Researching the value of your guitar on the internet may be free. The downside is that this research requires a big expenditure of time and a wide knowledge of guitar pricing resources. If you have your guitar appraised, remember that the appraiser may also be a dealer who is, after all, wanting to make a profit by reselling the guitar. For this reason, the appraisal MAY be biased.

Do you have to be in excellent physical condition to handle Yoshinkan Aikido?

Some background on me, I practiced karate, Judo, and very little Aikikai, but due to scheduling problems, decided to join a Yoshinkan beginning this week. I have researched a lot of both Aikikai and Yoshinkan, and I know that Aikikai is considered a "soft" style and Yoshinkan a "hard" style, but of course, I learned that it depends on the instructor. But my question is, I know both are similar, but will there be more focus on physical exercise in the warm up, like push-ups, running, etc? Or will it be like the "usual" Judo/Aikido warm-ups, that are mostly stretching, etc. I am not that worried, but I just want to be ready, I haven't done any major cardio for a while. thanks!

Actually, it doesn't matter what physical condition you're in, what matters is what mental condition you are in. Engaging in a martial arts you're not familiar with usually involves having to train muscles you don't usually use regularly, so no matter how fit you are, you usually feel fatigued after trying something new. It's what you do after feeling the exhaustion and fatigue that counts. If you really are determined to keep training and get better at it, then sooner or later you will reach your peak form in that art. So don't worry too much about it. I remember the first time I tried out Aikido back in college and feeling totally overwhelmed by the physical endurance training involved(yep it requires lots of stamina unlike popular misconceptions, our sensei was a hard taskmaster and required at least 100 repetitions of every drill and technique, warm up alone lasted 1 hour and not a minute less), I didn't think I could last a minute, but after years of training, I could go for an hour and still be able to raise my arms and remain standing. Just focus more on mastering one technique at a time, you'll get there soon enough.
