How good of a Quality are wal-mart fly fishing combos?

Hello i am an experienced spinning and baitcasting fisherman and want to start fly fishing and does anyone have experience with the walmart fly combos (5 weight)? There around 40 bucks and was hoping to get one today. will i regret it?

Once you've mastered the castin' then I guarantee the 40 bucker will go in the closet ie., you'll be wantin' another with the better quality. If the 40$ ain't goin' to really put a' dent in your wallet, I say sure. Got ta' have somethin' to get the hang of the different type fly casts and presentation. <);-3

Note: Learned how to cast both the level wind (baitcaster) and Fly Rod in the back yard YEARS ago ~ ha', had a BIG back yard;)... Was always told it was difficult learnin' the fly cast, h _ _ l picked it up in no time

Fly Fishing need good tippet line in 6x or 7x?

I was fishing this weekend in a extremely clear stream. You could count the rocks on the bottom and see the Trout from 40 ft away. I was using dry fly's and had a ton of looky loos that turned away at the last second. I was using Scientific Angler 4x trout tippets. The guy a the local Trout shop said I need to move down to a 6x,7x, or even 8x because of the clear water. What tippet line do you trust in this weight? The Trout are pretty good size as I caught one brown that weighed 4 lbs and one rainbow that weighed 2 lb.

Tippet choice is always a trade off. You sacrifice strength for stealth and vice versa. Heavier tippet also tangles less but can cause line shadows and scare away the fish. Moving to 6x or 7x is a good move to try in clear water with line-shy trout, although 8x is way too delicate to consistently catch 4-pound browns. The smallest I generally go is 6x. I use #22 flies with 6x and I don't have much problem. Haven't snapped my tippet in I can't remember how long. What brands do I trust? Pretty much all of them -- lately I've been using Frog Hair, Orvis, and Climax, mostly because I like the design of the spools and the way they handle.

I want to take issue with your local fly shop guy, though. If you were getting looks at your fly, the fish weren't exhibiting line-shy behavior. When your line is scaring the fish, they panic and scatter. They see the line, its shadow, or the dimple in the water, and they'll take it for a threat above them. When that happens they go DOWN, or they swim off fast.

What you were seeing is clear-water refusals. On clear and/or slow water, where the trout can carefully examine the fly, you have to up your game on fly choice, not tippet choice. You have to switch flies often and you have to be VERY aware of the forage you're trying to imitate.

Think about it -- the water's clear and slow. A potential meal floats by. The trout rises and slowly drifts along with the fly, making sure it's something he wants to chow down on. If it looks wrong in any way, the trout has the luxury of waiting for the next offering. This is not necessarily because the fly is suspicious that it's an artificial (though some trout seem very suspicious) or sees your tippet. It's often because the trout simply doesn't want to eat anything that's not food, and there's generally a lot of stuff on the water that may look like food but that is not food -- cottonwood seeds, duck feathers, bits of leaves, etc.

So, I'd make sure you've got the right fly. Match the hatch and match it GOOD. Use spent, cripple, and emerger patterns as part of your attack, and change flies often. A fish that refuses one artificial will probably refuse the next one.

If you can't do that, I'd try fishing riffles and faster water. In these areas the fish have more trouble seeing the fly and less time to make the choice to rise. Bigger fish have learned that foraging in clear, slow water pays off, so you might get smaller fish in faster water, but if you can't dial in your imitation, you'll have to move to water where the fish are less selective.

Spare Spool

If you're a seasoned fisherman, then you know exactly what you need in a reel, whether spinning reel, baitcaster, Fly Reel, conventional reel or whatever. For the beginner however, it's not so easy. When you walk into a fishing store or search this website, you are confronted with all sorts of weird and wonderful designs from a myriad of manufacturers. So where do you start?

Determine firstly where you intend to fish and what sort of fish you are likely to catch or want to catch. Will you be fishing amongst snags, off a rocky foreshore, or from a boat in open water? As a general rule you should try to fish with as light an outfit as conditions will allow. An exception to this, however, is if you intend to release your catch, but more about this in another article.

A spinning reel is probably the best choice for the beginner. Some will steer you toward a spincasting reel, but in my opinion the spinning reel offers a few additional benefits over the spincaster. They are easy to use and can be used for every fishing application. Spinning reels can be used to fight any fish including saltwater pelagics whilst the smaller spinning reels, used with very light line, can be used to cast the lightest of lures or baits.

Baitcasters are a common choice with bass fishermen, but baitcasters cannot be used to cast very light lures or baits. Baitcasters also require a considerable amount of skill to avoid overruns, although once mastered they are a wonderful choice of reel. Conventional reels are basically the saltwater equivalent of the baitcaster. Great for trolling or dropping baits into the murky depths.

Spinning reels will often come with a spare spool, but it always pays to buy one or two extra spools so that you can cover more fishing applications with the one spinning reel. Spools of 4lb, 10lb and 15lb line might be appropriate for your needs, but be guided by the fishing environment and the fish you are likely to catch.

A spincaster reel is often recommended for a novice angler. They're good little reels, but have some limitations if you want to get into some seriously big fish which can rip heaps of line from your reel.

Fly Fishing is a specialised area. If you intend to go this way, ensure that you receive some sound instruction to set you on the right path and to guide you on the specific type of fly reel with which to start. Generally not recommended for the novice.

In summary, spinning reels are wonderfully versatile, easy to use reels that can be used for pretty well every fishing application, so I highly recommend that beginners start with a spinning reel.

How long is fishing line good for, when should it be replaced?

I'm getting set to go out to lake erie with my son. I found my Fishing Pole which hasn't been used for about 5 to 10 years. The line on the reel seems like it is still in good shape and strong. Should I replace it, or will I be fine with what's on there?

Look at the cost of a fishing trip -- several hours of your time, plus whatever you pay for the boat, bait, and other equipment. Reloading the reel is only a few bucks, but it can make the difference between a great day with a trophy fish, or a day you kick yourself for when you break that fish off.

I use clear line, which should be nice and shiny, but if it starts to lose the shine, it's gone. In the salt, it goes quickly (4-5 fishing trips, sometimes faster if I get into a good bite on big fish), but even if I don't put the line in the water over a season (sometimes happens with a rig I seldom use) I replace the line at least annually.

With all the fly patterns available, what did you come with on your own that catches fish?

Mine is "Mr. Moose"
Size 12/14 standard Mustad wet fly hook + gold bead head
Body: black or brown mohair yarn
Tail: black or brown goose biots
Collar: peacock herl
Legs: 3 strands moose hair on each side
Thread: brown or black

Sadly it hasn't got a name yet and I'm still improving its design along with others(the great thing about fly tying) but its simply a lure best fished on an intermediate line with a slow figure of 8 retrieve, Ive found it fishes best on 8lb Rio fluorocarbon, firstly a size 8 mustad long shank hook, then a quick base whipping with black thread, all strengths works, then its simply a white marabou and yellow marabou mix to form a short tail, then its dubbed with Krystal flash either lime green or coral, finish by adding lead dumbbell eyes(orange color) and whip finishing, also tried it with a hackle but it didn't work so well, i like to add a few strands of silver holographic tinsel in the tail, good choice of mustad hooks, i never use anything other when it comes to fly tying, i might try a gold bead head instead of the dumbbells sometime. Finnish the head with a coat of epoxy, its accounted for 6 good sized trout lately so it must be doing something right.

Bamboo Fly

Just as with any other sport, the equipment you use when Fly Fishing can be very important. There are various types of fly fishing equipment that you need when you undertake fly fishing, and be prepared because some of it can get quite expensive so look into used fly fishing equipment.!

Of course, you'll need a rod and reel. What type of rod you choose depends on the type of fish you will be angling for. Fly rods are ranked according to their net weight capabilities (nwt). The nwt number will tell you what type of fish you will be able to catch. Fish that weigh 8 pounds will require at least an 8 nwt rod, etc. The larger the nwt number, the larger fish you can catch. Some rods are multi-rated (e.g. 7-9 nwt). These rods are good to use because they can accommodate a variety of fish, but multi-rated rods tend to be less flexible than single rated rods.

Rods are made of fiberglass, graphite, or bamboo. Fiberglass rods are durable and less expensive. Fiberglass rods are best for beginning fly fishermen because they can be used in a variety of situations. Graphite rods are lighter and will give you more fighting weight when it comes to landing a fish. Bamboo rods can be expensive, but they are extremely strong and are suited to a more laid-back casting style. so again check online for used fly fishing equipment and rods.

Your Fly Line will need to match the nwt of your rod. If you have an 8 nwt rod, you'll need to use an 8 nwt line. It is acceptable to go one or two sizes above or below your rod weight (i.e. 9 nwt or 7 nwt). Buy line that is strong and durable. Some lines are specially designed for freshwater, saltwater, etc.

You will also need to have a durable net that you can carry with you. After the fish has lost its will to fight, a good net is used to scoop them out of the water. This can be a big part of your used fly fishing equipment because without a good net, you won't be able to get your fish out of the water!

Having the right used fly fishing equipment is important for both the beginner as well as the experienced angler. As you get better and better at the sport, you will begin to see how important having good used fly fishing equipment can be. You can always upgrade, so it's good to start out small with used fly fishing equipment and work your way up to the more expensive stuff. Your fly fishing equipment can make a world of difference between landing that big fish or catching an ordinary one.

Help identifying a bamboo fishing/Fly Rod!?

I found this really cool bamboo fishing rod at an antiques shop today. It's insignia on the rod was a globe and below it it said "Globe". It's an old rod, most likely 80's or 90's, pretty Good Condition. the weird thing was, the reel seat was ABOVE the cork handle, which i have never seen in a fly rod. im pretty sure its a fly rod though, its really long, 4 pieces, and get REALLY thin at the top; plus, it dont know why anyone would make a bamboo spinning rod? anyways, if anyone has an info, and what it is worth i would appreciate it. BTW, it was like 40 some dollars in the shop.
Yeah its in a woodbox with an unopened pack of hooks and a bobber or two. its in pretty good condition. what do you think the retail value is in good condition?

most likely from the 50s or 60s. l am guessing the handle is reversible. many rods were built to use with multiple styles of fishing. particularly imported ones. l'm also guessing this is a relatively inexpensive import from china or japan. the US market was flooded with lots of cheap asian imports after WW2.
it wasn't just them. many american manufacturers of steel and copper rods back in the day made them supposedly to be used as fly rods and casting rods. especially the telescopic ones.
but if it is in real good condition, that's a fair price. did you get the wooden box with it?

How do I choose the correct color for a saltwater fishing lure?

I typically fish (surfcasting, pier fishing) for Stripers and Bluefish using a bottom-feeding rig on the Connecticut shore. I want to start using some lures but there are so many colors to choose from...anyone know where I can find some good info specifically about the coloring of lures?

Good question! I prefer the shiney chrome ones if I am fishing for Stripers. Bluefish, get a floater with light bottom and darker top - some are green, some blue. I don't care for the orange ones.

But bluefish go after anything you thow in the school. Be sure you have long strong steel leaders (black). So they don't go after your line! I lost more blues that way.

Trout Fishing

In this article I'm going to discuss some of the most effective baits to use while fishing for trout in order to determine the best bait for trout fishing. Is this possible? Is it possible that there's a "best" bait for trout fishing? I'm not entirely sure, but after fishing for these wonderful fish for more than 25 years I can honestly say that some are certainly better than others, and one in particular is certainly my favorite.

Before I get into the trout baits themselves, it's important to know the type of trout that you're attempting to catch. Not the species of fish, but the kind of trout. There are two basic kinds. Stocked (or planted) and native. Stocked trout are placed into the river or lake by the governments' fish & game department. Native trout on the other hand were born and live in the water in which they reside. Actually stocked trout can become native after living in said body of water for an extended period of time (2 or more years).

Why do I mention stocked and native? Simply because both manners of trout tend to eat different kinds of bait, and as an angler you should be aware of this fact. Stocked trout eat baits such as corn, marshmallows, dough baits, and cheese. Native trout, on the other hand, tend to shy away from such baits, and tend to eat "live" baits such as worms, minnows, and crayfish. Basically, native trout are much more savvy (and more challenging) to catch than stocked trout.

One of the most popular (and effective) baits for trout fishing are synthetic baits that are shaped into live bait shapes. These baits are shaped like worms, minnows and crayfish (to name a few) and are impregnated with fish catching scents. The most popular manufacturers of these trout baits is Berkley, and are named Powerbait and Gulp. These baits, rigged on a set of gang hooks can be extremely effective.

Another popular bait is small spinners and spoons, such as Rooster Tails and Phoebe Minnows. Both native and stocked trout will bite these lures. These baits are effective in both the flowing water of rivers and streams and still the water of lakes. The important thing to remember in regards to these types of lures is to keep them small. 1/8 to 1/3 ounce will usually suffice.

The last bait that I want to touch on for trout fishing is the old standby live bait. This may indeed be the best bait for trout fishing. Live crayfish, for example, are probably the best bait for large trout. I live crayfish that's allowed to flow naturally with the current of a small trout river is a great large trout bait. Live worms are extremely effective for trout fishing as well. As a matter of fact a live worm rigged on a set of gang hooks and allowed to flow naturally with the current of a small river or stream is a great "all around" trout bait, and could very well be the best.

Does this article give you an answer to the best bait for trout fishing? Not one single answer, but it certainly gives you the best options that are available. Now you can go out, give these baits a try, and determine for yourself which is the best.

In my experience live worms are hard to beat when trout fishing (especially in rivers and streams), but for you it may be different? The cool thing about fishing is that there's only one way to find out. Get out on the water and figure out your best bait for trout fishing.

Fishing Flies

If you are searching for Trout Fishing flies, then you will most likely be choosing from the four types within this article. The first are dry flies. Dry flies  float on top of the water. Dry flies look like the adult form of a water insect. Use this type of fly in freshwater fishing.  Watching these insects in the wild is interesting. They are usually found floating in freshwater that has a slight film to it.

The second is a wet fly. Use a Wet fly when it is necessary to sink the fly below the waterline. There are a few kinds of wet flies and you should do your research before buying. Depending on the trout, you will need to buy a specific fly. Wet flies look like larva (very young insects), nymphs (the immature insect), pupa (a fly on the verge of adulthood), drowned insects, bait fish and others. This group come populated with a wide choice of flies. Using the wrong one will most likely end up with no trout biting on your line.

The third type of fly is the nymph. Nymphs as discussed above. They are the immature insect. They take on the shape of crustaceans or flies.

The fourth is a streamer. A streamer fly is made to look like a bait fish or a game fish. Use streamers for both fresh water and Salt Water trout fishing. Trout are found in both fresh and salt water. Use a streamers when there is a need for large bait. It is most effect with fishing larger trout, such as 9 to 20 inches in size.

Becoming an expert on all types of flies is crucial to becoming an expert fisherman. Know the kind of trout, the trout environment, baits and lures will help you succeed in having more successful fishing days. If you log your fishing days, you will start to see what is working for you. The more knowledge you gain, the more fish you will catch.

How do I make flies float for Fly Fishing?

I was trying my flies today which were dry flies and then kept sinking what do i do

First make sure the flies in question are dry flies. You say they're dry flies and I'm inclined to believe you. Not trying to imply you're dumb or anything, but it also sounds like you're a beginner, so just make sure they really are dry flies.

Keeping a dry fly on top of the water is partly the fly's job, but it's partly your job, too. If you drop a dry fly on flat, still water, it should float. But once you start factoring in things like moving water, line drag, and presentation, it's not difficult to sink a dry fly. I guess what I'm trying to tell you is yes, your dry flies should float, but they don't float like a cork or a bobber -- they'll sink if you're doing something wrong. So, let's go through it point by point.

Moving water -- not all dry flies are good for fast or "jumpy" water. By this I mean peaking or curling waves, plunging water, swirling eddies -- like rapids. Even high winds can contribute to sinking a fly. Only really heavy-hackled, high-riding flies will stay afloat through that kind of water, like Wulff, foam flies, or caddisfly patterns. Wispy, delicate patterns will swamp in jumpy water.

Drag -- when you fish a dry fly, usually you will just let the fly drift. That is, you will let it float on the current (or sit stationary on stillwater). If you do this, the fly should stay afloat. If you jerk the line or let the line drag on the fly, the line will pull it under the water. In order to keep the line from dragging on the fly, you have to mend the Fly Line -- you have to take up slack and adjust the line on the water such that the line doesn't pull on the fly, nor leave too much slack for a striking fish. (Again, I don't know if you know about his or not, so I'm saying something that may be really obvious to you.)

Presentation -- if you slap your flies down onto the water, they'll swamp. Your cast should put the fly down gently on the water -- small dry flies shouldn't disturb the water surface at all.

False casting -- false casting is useful for drying off a dry fly between presentations. Dry flies don't necessarily stay afloat because they are perfectly dry -- most stay afloat because their hackles "walk" on the surface tension of the water, like a waterskeeter's legs. But it's easier for the hackles to stay out of the water if the fly is as dry as can be. False casting dries off the fly. You can also reel in the fly and dry it on your sleeve or flypatch. If you want to get really serious, carry a desiccant -- a small can of sandlike material. Place the fly in the can, shake it a bit, and the fly is dry.

Fly dressing -- there are many products on the market that you can apply to your dry flies to make them slightly more hydrophobic. These are usually waxy or oily substances that you rub sparingly on to the fly. I use Gink, but only on flies that have trouble floating over repeated casts, like delicate and exceedingly feathery mayflies. Two tips: first, use dry fly dressing on perfectly dry flies -- once the fly is wet, it doesn't work. Second, use it sparingly -- too much can actually work against flotation.

What kind of knot should I use to tie a clothesline securely to the eye hooks?

The clothesline is being put on a "T" style clothesline we built. We put four 1/2" eye hooks on each "T".

Normally you don't. You hook a pulley on them, and string a line from one to the other, around the pulley, and back, and tie the line to a tensioner.

If you only tie the lines the weight of the clothes will stretch the line, and the clothes may drag on the ground
